How do I know if the Abraham House is right for me or my loved one? Abraham House is designed to care for individuals who have reached the end of curative therapy options and are seeking comfort care at the end of life. Abraham House provides every facet of care, based closely on the model of caring for a loved one at home. Abraham House accepts all individuals regardless of diagnosis, gender, religion, race or financial status. I would like to take a tour of Abraham House, is this possible? It is possible to tour Abraham House. However, because of the nature of our organization we ask that you call first so that we can ask our guests' permission to have outside visitors. Maintaining our guests dignity and comfort is our first priority. Is it possible for our family to stay at the Abraham House with our loved one? Yes. With the ability to host three family members at a time, Abraham House is able to provide accommodations to family members wishing to stay right at the home. We have full living quarters located in the upstairs section of the home. We also have a bed available to set up in the guests room if you should wish to stay right alongside your loved one. Is it true that Abraham House provides all of the care, housing and food at absolutely no cost? Yes. Abraham House prides itself on the philosophy that we provide care to all individuals at absolutely no cost to the guest or his/her family. Abraham House is run solely on donations, fundraising and grants. Who provides direct care at Abraham House? All care given at Abraham House is provided by surrogate caregivers who are trained volunteers or staff members. Each volunteer of staff member is required to attend Abraham House's training course conducted by our staff and healthcare professionals. You do not need to have any healthcare experience to become a volunteer - just an open heart and a willingness to learn how to care for another person. We help you do the rest!
Do I have to be under the care of a healthcare agency to be admitted to Abraham House? Yes, currently we require that our guest be a patient of Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. We coordinate care with our local Hospice to ensure our guests are receiving the best possible care. The Hospice provides any medical equipment beyond what we have at Abraham House, a Hospice nurse sets up our guests’ medications and coordinates care between the Hospice team and our team. We can admit guests who are currently in the hospital or at home. If you are not currently a Hospice patient, you can be admitted to Hospice and to our House at the same time without delay. Please call Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. at 315-733-6484 who will assess your need for our collaborative services.
What is the ratio of caregivers to guests? There will always be at least one caregiver to two guests at Abraham House. During the day the caregiver to guest ratio is generally 1:1. When are visitors allowed at Abraham House? Family members are allowed to visit 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Any visitors outside of the immediate family are asked to call ahead of time for permission to visit. This system is in place so that we are able to monitor the number of people visiting our guests to ensure that they are not overwhelmed. Again, our main goal is comfort and dignity of our guests. Can I bring my pet to visit? We understand that pets are an important part of the family. We do allow pets to visit with appropriate proof of vaccination from your veterinarian. Does Abraham House offer spiritual support? Abraham House is capable of meeting the needs of any religious affiliation. Many times families wish to have their own personal religious leader visit them at the home.
